Letter from Doke and Promotions 20th June 2012

Hi all

I arrived in Vegas last Friday night with Daragh Davey and Jason Tompkins. We're staying in the Jockey Club for the next 5 weeks. We got a very good deal on it with the location being so good (it's stuck between the Bellagio and The Cosmopolitan in the heart of the strip).

So far I've played two bracelet events with no joy. In Saturday's 1500 I never got up much past starting stack and before I knew the time had come where I had to make a move. More on my exit hand in the strategy section.

Sunday's 1k event was a very different experience. I chipped up steadily with no real setbacks from 3k starting to 15k. Unfortunately my first real setback was fatal as I lost a 40k race with aks versus jacks and a short stack's fours. It would have been a good flip to win as when the bubble burst a few hours later average stack was 27k. Well done to my roommate Daragh Davey for his deep run.

I have 7 more bracelet events scheduled before the main event so I'm optimistic of getting a run at some point. Tomorrow's 1500 would be a good place to start.

This week's strategy section looks at how to recognise good reshoving spots and when they have to be taken. 15 to 20 big blind stacks are ideal to reshove over an opening raise. The reason for this is risk reward and price. With more than 20 big blinds you're risking too much for too little if you do run into a hand. With less than 15 big blinds the original raiser is priced in with a wide range of hands so it's much more likely you will be called. In my first bracelet event this year I found myself with 3400 at 100/200. However within a few minutes the blinds would rise to 150/300, at which point I couldn't expect to have fold equity on my reshoves. Therefore I was on the lookout for a good reshove spot. I was dealt a5o. Not exactly a great hand but good enough for the situation that developed. Folded to a loose player in the hijack seat, he opened as he was doing over 50% of the times it was folded to him. Two bad loose passive players behind called. They almost never have a hand that can call a shove, and the opener usually doesn't so it was a good spot to try to add 50% to my stack. In these spots the shove gets through often enough for it to be profitable to shove a wide range of hands. How wide? Pretty much any hand that has about a 30% chance or better of winning if called. A5o fits the bill as it will be about 30% against any calling hand (other than aces and the ace in my hand makes it less likely someone has aces).

As it happened the original raiser had aq and held. But in the long run moves like that are profitable and have to be made.
